What is the PSI exam

The PSI Equivalence Exam is a gateway for global pharmacists to work in Ireland. This exam tests the competence of pharmacists who have completed their studies and their training from countries outside the European Union and are willing to practice pharmacy in Ireland.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland is the public body that regulates and oversees the registration process for pharmacists in Ireland. Clearing this exam allows pharmacists to migrate, practise and settle as a registered pharmacist in Ireland.

PSI Equivalence Exam Eligibility Criteria

The basic educational requirement to apply for registration with the PSI is a five year continuous degree in pharmacy. So this means, you have to have a PharmD degree if you completed your pharmacy education from India. Having a BPharm+MPharm qualification would not suffice as they don’t come under continuous degree.

In pointers, the eligibility to appear for the exam is mentioned below

  1. A 5-year pharmacy degree with 4 years academic + 1 year practical training OR 4 ½ years academic + 6 months practical training (PharmD in the Indian scenario)
  2. Registration as a pharmacist from the concerned authority in your home or any other country.

The required documents for the application are as follows:

  • Identity, verification document (passport)
  • Statutory document (to be signed by a solicitor)
  • Syllabus copy
  • Academic transcript
  • Registration certificate
  • Good standing certificate

Along with this, you have to pay an application fee of €1500, which is non-refundable.

Procedure for PSI Equivalence

Any candidate trained in a country outside of Europe will have to go through this registration pathway, which is called the third country registration. When you go to the official website of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, you can get an application form which you have to fill out and submit along with the required documents
When your documents are being reviewed, you have to wait until you hear back from the PSI. After your verification is complete and you are fit to take the registration exam, the PSI will inform you of the exam date.
The next step of the process is the Equivalence Exam, which will test your proficiency in pharmacy. The exam has two parts- an MCQ exam and the OSCE exam. Based on your performance in both of these phases, your results will be derived.
After passing the equivalency exam, you’ll need to travel to Ireland for an adaptation or internship, lasting 6 months to 3 years. For adaptation, you’ll need to find a supervising pharmacist in Ireland. You’ll also receive payment throughout the adaptation period.
When you complete your adaptation or internship, you must take another exam called the PRE in Ireland (Professional Registration Exam). You will be taking this exam alongside other pharmacists who graduated from Ireland. After this exam, you can get completed registration as a pharmacist in Ireland.
Either IELTS, TOFEL or OET is required to get registered in the Pharmacy Society of Ireland as a pharmacist.
